Blake Rutherford grew up in Picayune, MS. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience at high levels of competitive swimming to Lakeside Aquatic Team. At the age of 4, he started his 15 year competitive swimming career. He participated in Summer Swim for the St. Tammany Swim League where he still holds numerous league records. At the age of 8 years old, he began swimming year round for Ray Lossett and the Mississippi Piranhas Aquatic Club and eventually for Ed Kelly with the Hurricane Swim Club. With MPAC and HSC, he won numerous State Championships and competed in several Zone and Sectional Championships. During high school he swam for Picayune Memorial High School and helped bring them their first MHSAA team championship. Coach Blake earned a college scholarship to Div. II King College (now King University) in Bristol, TN where he participated in the sprint freestyle and distance butterfly events. In his only season, he broke the 200 butterfly team record (which he held 5 years) and placed 7th at the conference meet.
Coach Blake began his coaching career at the summer league level during his High School years. After hanging up his suit and goggles in 2011, Coach Blake has continued his calling of coaching for the last 8 years. He has coached at the USA club, US Masters, and High School levels. He has both trained and assisted MHSAA State Champions, Ironman Finishers, Junior/Senior National Qualifiers, and Olympic Trial Qualifiers.
Born an educator, Coach Blake is currently a P.E. and Computer Science Teacher at Pearl River Central High School. For the 2019-2020 school year, he is excited to embark on a new journey at Pearl River Central Middle School as their Junior Cadet Corp Instructor. He has been active in the Air Force Reserves the last 7 years as an Aircraft Electrician.
As an Assistant Swim Coach at Lakeside Aquatic Team, Coach Blake will strive to educate his athletes and promote a positive culture for the sport of swimming in Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi, encourage his swimmers to race and train with integrity, and expect the utmost respect of their teammates both in and out of the pool. He expects to teach the skills it takes to maximize potential and to build confidence through hard work, smart work, and discipline while maintaining a fun and challenging environment.
